Protecting an Art Deco Landmark with Discretion
The Challenge
Louis Vuitton’s Lille boutique is located in the heart of the city’s historic centre — an architecturally sensitive area close to UNESCO-designated heritage sites. The building itself is listed, distinguished by a prominent Art Deco façade that defines its street presence.
Following a reactive security requirement, protection measures needed to be introduced without altering:
- The architectural identity of the listed façade
- The visual integrity of the surrounding historic streetscape
- The building’s protected status and planning constraints
The solution had to satisfy municipal and heritage expectations while preserving the brand’s refined storefront experience.
The Unfaor LUXE Response
The Core
Unafor developed a bespoke protective solution, carefully dimensioned and detailed to complement the proportions and material language of the Art Deco frontage.
The objective was clear: introduce certified storefront protection that remains visually quiet and architecturally aligned.
Given the listed status of the building and its proximity to UNESCO-recognised heritage, planning sensitivity was central to the project.
Unafor undertook the full approval pathway, including:
- Design development tailored to heritage constraints
- Preparation and submission of construction and planning applications
- Direct coordination with municipal authorities
This structured process ensured compliance without compromising design integrity.
Delivery
Installation was executed with precision within the constrained historic streetscape.
Works were carefully sequenced to:
- Allow the store to operate undisturbed for the entire duration of the 5 day installation period
- Maintain the quality of the surrounding public realm
- Deliver a clean, controlled installation appropriate to a listed property
Collaboration & Stakeholder Management
Successful delivery required close coordination between:
- Louis Vuitton’s project team
- City of Lille authorities
From early design through to installation, Unafor acted as a single point of responsibility — aligning heritage requirements, municipal approvals, and security engineering into one coherent process.
This integrated approach ensured that protection strengthened resilience while preserving Lille’s architectural character.
The Result
- Inconspicuous protection integrated into a listed Art Deco building
- Full alignment with historic centre and UNESCO-adjacent sensitivitie
- Seamless coordination of design, permits, and installation
- Preservation of architectural identity and brand presence
The Louis Vuitton Lille project demonstrates how reactive security requirements in historic urban centres can be resolved with care, collaboration, and contextual intelligence — advancing Urban Safety for Liveable Cities without altering what makes those cities distinctive.
Safeguard Heritage. Protect Brand Value.
