Design-Led Storefront Protection in Austin’s Domain Northside Retail District

A bespoke impact-rated protection scheme carefully integrated into one of Texas’ busiest luxury retail environments while maintaining store operations and architectural continuity.

The Challenge

Located within Austin’s thriving Domain and Domain Northside retail district, the project formed part of a wider proactive storefront protection programme for a global technology brand.

The Domain Northside area is recognised for its active outdoor retail environment, combining luxury retail, dining, hospitality, and public gathering spaces within a highly pedestrianised setting. The storefront sits within a constantly active streetscape where customer experience, pedestrian movement, and visual consistency are central to the success of the environment.

The introduction of impact-rated storefront protection therefore required an approach that could integrate seamlessly into the existing landscape architecture without disrupting the established aesthetic or the day-to-day operation of the store.

Construction activity also needed to be carefully phased around peak pedestrian flows, neighbouring retail activity, and ongoing store operations in one of Austin’s busiest retail destinations.

The Unfaor LUXE Response

The Core

Unafor delivered a bespoke impact-rated Unafor Core solution integrated directly into a combination of:

  • In-situ cast low walls
  • In-situ cast landscape planters
  • Bespoke precast GFRC bollard covers

The scheme was engineered to provide the required storefront protection performance while remaining visually aligned with the surrounding architectural environment.

To preserve continuity across the public realm, all visible elements were hand-finished to achieve an exact match with the existing site finishes and landscape materials. The protective infrastructure was intentionally designed to read as part of the wider streetscape rather than as standalone security equipment.

This careful integration allowed the upgraded protection measures to support the visual quality and customer experience expected within the Domain Northside environment.

Delivery

Delivery required intensive coordination between the client design team, component manufacturers, landlord representatives, and contractors throughout both the design and installation phases.

Given the density and activity of the retail district, construction sequencing and logistics planning became a critical component of the project. Installation works were phased carefully to:

  • Maintain store operations throughout construction
  • Minimise disruption to neighbouring retailers and visitors
  • Accommodate heavy pedestrian traffic during peak periods
  • Preserve safe and efficient circulation through the retail environment

Collaboration & Stakeholder Management

The project demonstrated the importance of collaborative delivery within premium, high-traffic managed retail destinations where operational, architectural, and public-realm considerations intersect.

Close coordination between all stakeholders ensured that technical requirements, finish quality, construction sequencing, and pedestrian management strategies remained aligned throughout the programme.

The result was a protection scheme capable of enhancing storefront resilience while respecting the energy and openness of one of Austin’s most vibrant retail environments.
